This Sequin Zip Case makes such a cute DIY gift for Valentine’s Day! Fill it with anything from candy to gift cards (or both) and give it to someone special
I jump at the chance to make DIY gifts because it shows people that you care enough to create something special just for them. There’s no better holiday to do this than Valentine’s Day! After all, that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about, right?
This cute sequin zip case has become one of my go-to gifts because you can fill it with candy, gift cards or any other small gift. It’s perfect for friends, family, teachers or anyone else that deserves a special treat.
Normally it can be tricky to decorate sequin covered surfaces but not when you’ve got Artesprix Sublimation Markers on hand. Now you can get as creative as you want with those sequin blanks!
What are Sublimation Markers?
Artesprix Sublimation Markers are markers that work with heat to create bold, vibrant designs on a variety of blanks. Blanks can be anything from tote bags, coasters, aprons, mugs and so much more.
These markers are easy enough to use that anyone can create their own fun designs. All you do is draw or trace your image on regular copy paper. Then you just use a heat source to transfer the image to your blank. It that simple!
Materials you will need for this Zip Case project:

- Sublimation Markers
- Sequin Zip Case
- Plain Copy Paper
- Heat Tape
- Protective Paper
Tools:
- Heat Press, Dry Iron or Home Iron
- Protective Project Mat
- Lightbox, or window
- Pencil
Step by Step Tutorial:
Step 1. Start by tracing your zip case on a sheet of copy paper so you know how much room you have to work with. Then make your design. You can draw freehand, create your own template or just find clipart online to trace.
Step 2. Flip the paper and place it on your lightbox. Lay a new sheet of copy paper on top and trace your design. (If you don’t have a lightbox, you can hold your paper up to a window and trace that way)
Step 3. Once you have the outline, grab your Artesprix Markers and start coloring. Whoever says coloring is for kids obviously hasn’t done it as a grownup…it’s every bit as much fun when you’re older. Since candy conversation hearts are usually pastel colored, I used the Artesprix Pastel Pack for this project (though I did steal a yellow marker from the original 10 pack).
Step 4. Wait until the ink is completely dry, then use your lightbox again to trace the words. You can use the end of the black chiseled tip marker or one of the fine point markers from the pack of Black Sublimation Markers.
Step 5. Set the temperature on your heat source to 400. While you wait for it to preheat, smooth the sequins on the zip bag so that the silver side is showing.
Step 6. Next, place your design face down on the sequins so that the ink side is against the bag. Use Artesprix heat tape to secure your design in place.
Step 7. Once your heat source reaches 400, cut two pieces of Artesprix Protective Paper. This will help protect your heat plate as the color is transferred.
Step 8. Use the protective paper to make a sublimation sandwich, with one sheet on top and one on bottom. Think of the protective paper as your bread and the zip case as your cheese. When you place your sequin zip case on the heat press, be sure that the zipper is outside of the plate area. Otherwise the heat could damage it.
Step 9. Heat for 60 seconds, then place the zip case on your protective project mat until it cools. Be careful, it’ll be hot!
Step 10. Once it cools, it’s time for the best part…the big reveal!
Step 11.This is my favorite part of the entire process (besides the coloring of course). It’s so much fun to see how the heat transforms the colors and brings my design to life!
Now all I have to do is fill it with candy and I’ve got the perfect Valentine’s Day Gift!
I love how cute this turned out and my youngest daughter has already claimed this one for herself! I can see that I’m going to have to make more and next time I think I’ll try the original 10 pack.
