Welcome back Iron-on-Ink friends! I’m Designer Naomi and I’m back with a fun pet bandana project. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I created a custom, one-of-a-kind (because I couldn’t duplicate it if I tried) transfer for my pet bandana for my puppy, Tika. These Artesprix Pet Bandanas come in 3 sizes, are a "cotton-feel", and have so much room to get creative!
What is Artesprix Iron-on-Ink?
Artesprix Sublimation Markers, Ink, and Paint are specially formulated to allow you to use basic copy paper to: color, stamp, stencil, and monoprint anything you wish and turn it into a heat-transferable design. These designs are then applied to a polyester or polyester coated substrate with heat and pressure. You can use a heat press or a home iron! These designs, through this process of sublimation, will become permanent on your substrates.
Supplies:
Sublimation Pet Bandana Blank
Red and White Iron-On-Ink Sublimation Acrylic Paint
Black Sublimation Stamp Pad
Small Stamp of your choice
Paint Brush or Sponge
Plain Copy Paper
Heat Tape
Protective Paper
Lint Roller
HTV/ Iron on in your choice of color
Cricut or other cutting machine (optional)
Pencil
Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: Mix the red and white paint together to make pink. I used a ratio of 2 drops of red and 20 drops of white.
Pro Tip #1: Add more or less white to change the shade of pink. The red paint is very pigmented and you need very little to get a bright, saturated color.
Step 2: Paint an entire sheet of copy paper with the paint color you just made. Allow it to dry completely.
Pro Tip #2: Legal size copy paper is a great choice for larger areas like the pet bandana.
Step 3: Use a pencil to trace around the pet bandana on a sheet of copy paper.
Step 4: Use the black stamp pad and a paw stamp to create a random pattern on the painted paper.
Pro Tip #3: Use a lint roller to clean off the pet bandana before Step 5.
Step 5: Place the pet bandana face down on your finished design and secure with heat tape.
Step 6: Make a "sublimation sandwich" to get ready to transfer the design. Do this by placing a sheet of protective paper on the bottom plate of your heat press. Next, add the taped down bandana and painted paper, with the paper on top. Finally, cover with another sheet of protective paper.
Step 7: Turn on your heat press and set the temperature to 385℉ with the timer set to 30 seconds.
Step 8: Press the design using medium pressure.
Pro Tip #5: Use a pressing pillow to avoid hard press lines.
Step 10: Before removing the bandana from the heat press, do a “peek test” by lifting just one corner of the paper to see if the design transferred. If the transfer could be brighter, check your time, temperature, and pressure, then re-press.
Pro Tip #6: You can use a pressing pillow to lift the main part of the bandana above the seams to get a better print.
Step 11: Finish off your bandana by adding your pet’s name to the bandana with HTV of your choice. I chose glitter!
That is all there is to it. Not only do I love the way this pet bandana turned out, but also how fast I was able to create a sublimation transfer with Artesprix Iron-on-Ink. Even though Miss Tika is not impressed, I am! You can change up the paint and stamp colors, or the design stamps.
